She has wowed the classes the world over with her powerhouse performances, but its the masses shes keen to impress back home. And for Tannishtha Chatterjee its recognition in her homeland that matters more than getting to rub shoulders with international celebs. And even a nomination alongside Judi Dench and Anne Hathaway for her role in Brick Lane, a film Bhopal: Prayer for Rain opposite Martin Sheen, apart from several international projects in her kitty hasnt prompted the Delhi-based actress to pack her bags and move to the west permanently.
International fame feels good, but for me recognition on homeground is as much important. I mean, I would absolutely love to work with actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp someday, but Id be equally excited about working with Naseeruddin Shah and Irrfan Khan here, smiles the dusky actress who admits that she doesnt understand why should Indian actors be awed by their Hollywood counterparts or the big deal about doing international films. I think Hollywood actors are good, but then so are our Bollywood actors, she says.
The young actress who has been there and done it all is now training her sights on Bollywood. I know most actors usually move on to international cinema after tasting success in Bollywood, but my careers following the opposite trajectory and Im looking forward to doing some interesting films here. The fact that shes played the protagonist in most of her films in the past, isnt going to stop her from doing the hero-dominated kind of films in Bollywood.
Yes, I know theres a dearth of good female-centric films in Bollywood, but I dont mind playing the second fiddle to the hero once in a while. And the ones she looks forward to working with are? Id love to do comedy with Akshay Kumar, an action film with Saif Ali Khan and a romantic film with Aamir Khan. I have played complex characters, Bollywood would be a good change, laughs the actress. In fact, Ill be a package deal since I can not only act, but also dance and sing.
Eager to demystify the notion that actors associated with parallel cinema have certain sensibilities and hence feel like misfits in Bollywood, Tannishtha says, For me its all about acting convincingly. The medium, genre, language dont make a difference. Most of the roles that Ive accepted so far have pushed me beyond my own limits as an actor, thats what really allures me to do a film, but that doesnt mean Ill feel uncomfortable dancing on snow-clad mountain peaks in a flimsy sari!
So while she prepares to take a plunge in Bollyland, will her international projects take a backseat? No, not really. The past few years have taught me to live out of a suitcase and I think Ill keep that up. Am not going to hang my travelling shoes yet, she smiles.
